“I gave them my number for the results,” Angel says on the way back, easing into traffic. “Three days. You heading home, or…?”

“I’m staying by Joy,” I say.

She nods. “I remember where her house is.”

“Thanks for bringing me today.”

“I needed the distraction. How’s everything at home?”

I don’t have the energy to fake it anymore. “I wish I could just crawl into a hole and never come out again.”

“Amen.” Angel turns onto the road to my house. “If you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”

“Thanks.”

“Tell me something.” She slows outside the house and slips the car into park. “Your dad is involved with that new development. Can you ask him about what happened with Toons? Two of the men went up the path last night, and maybe they have surveillance cameras. I know he didn’t have anything to do with that fire, but we can’t get proof.”

“We don’t talk much,” I say, “but I’ll try.”

Angel nods. “Yes, try. It’s important, okay?”

I nod as I get out, and close the truck door. “Thanks.” I hear Angel roll her window down. She waves me around to the driver’s side. I stand there and brace myself for a mini-lecture on being safe.

“I know it’s hard,” she says instead. “But just cause your mum isn’t with you in the same way doesn’t mean that she’s gone.”

It doesn’t make sense to me, but I don’t want to offend her. “Uh… okay.”

Angel nods, rolls up her window, and backs out. I turn up the driveway and head for the door. Too bad those words are just a bunch of hot air, as worthless as Toons whispering I good. My mother’s been going for years now, and I watched the last of her drain away right in front of me. I can’t pretend she’s still here.
